  • The first generation to formally have a "G" designation was the G3 and the last was the G6.
  • P/390, R/390 and 3006 (Integrated Server) are also considered "G2" at a current licensed internal code level
  • Linux for S/390 requires a "G5" or later processor or equivalent in 31-bit mode. Linux for System z requires a z/Architecture processor or equivalent in 64-bit mode.
  • The current levels of Linux for z Systems require a z196/z114 processor (or later).

    • z/OS V1 requires the zSeries 900 (z900), zSeries 800 (z800) or later, the 9672 G5 or G6, or the Multiprise 3000 processor. z/OS V1 is not supported on the z15 (or later) processors.

    • z/OS V2R2 requires a System z10 (or later) processor. 
    • z/OS V2R3 requires a zEC12/zBC12 (or later) processor. 
    • z/OS V2R4 requires a zEC12/zBC12 (or later) processor.

  2. I see that your page references the -09 edition of the Reference Summary and the -11 edition of Principles. I asked Tim Raley about these and he indicated they would be published "mid-august", which I guess is right about now.
